One of the lynch pins of bariatric surgery is the rule ‘No Drinking with Meals’. I have mentioned this on TV, radio, at support groups, in features, blogs and via messages to queries on how to achieve great success. Nothing however demonstrates this better than a visual reminder as to why this is so.
I thought of doing a video but this dude beat me to it (by quite some time) and it makes compelling short viewing. Watch and see why this rule is so important! Then check out two more – the 20:20:20 rule here and the importance of portion control here.

I believe this only applies to the RNY. VSGers have a fully functional pyloric valve that closes with dense foods. Drinking while eating can fill the sleeve uncomfortably, but it won’t “push food through faster.”

Hi Gwen, my bariatric team advises that it is especially relevant to those who have had a band or a bypass. They also suggest it is a useful rule to follow if you have had a sleeve too. Their only exception seems to be with more complex surgery such as a duodenal switch and then they give specific advice to those patients. It seems that, as usual, bariatric teams differ with their post-op recommendations/rules. Always follow your own team’s advice – they know you, your surgery and any complications. This rule, along with the 20-20-20 one has been very useful to me – but I am a gastric bypass patient. C x

I had a Gastric bypass in March and I have always eaten cereal with milk. This is obviously food and drink st the same time,is this harming me? Or stretching my stomach?
Thanks
Denise.

Hi Denise, no this simply relates more to beverages rather than food with a liquid such as cereal and milk, soup with stock, casseroles with gravy/bouillon, fruit salad with juice etc. Obviously I am assuming that you’re not pouring a gallon of milk over your cereal but in moderation (as a regular serving) this is fine. Hope things are going well… C x

Hi, I was told no drink 30 before and 30 after, so can I ask please what is 20,20,20? X

Wow. Some really great reminders here. I had my RNY in January of 2000 and lost 213 pounds. I have in the past several years regained about 75 pounds and am visiting bariatric sites for inspiration and reminders. The 20:20:20 rule and the no beverage rule are what I have forgotten and so I am ready to get back on track and get back down to my healthy weight.
Thanks to everyone for sharing. 🙂
