Well the sun finally came out today and my thoughts and tastebuds turned to salad for lunch. Usually I have a chiller drawer in my refrigerator bursting with salad fare but with such chilly summer days this week it’s virtually bare. A visit to my local Farmer’s Market was too time intensive so I popped into my local Waitrose instead….and there I bagged two very special new salads.
Both from Steve’s Leaves they are the perfect ready-prepared, off-the-shelf, ready-to-go salads I have tasted in a good long time. The BLT Salad with Quail’s Eggs and Caesar Dressing and Wasabi Rocket Salad with Ginger and Chilli Croutons and a Miso Dressing are fabulous.
The BLT salad bowl includes a mix of baby salad leaves (baby watercress, baby red Cos, baby chard), baby plum tomatoes, bacon, quail’s eggs and a pot of Caesar dressing; whilst the Wasabi salad bowl includes a mix of wasabi rocket and other baby leaves, cherry tomatoes, radish, ginger and chilli croutons and a pot of miso dressing.
Both would make a good meal for 1 (or maybe a generous half for a WLS patient) or serve 2-4 people as a side dish to a main meal.
Priced at £2.90 for the BLT and £2.75 for the Wasabi they may well be cheaper and certainly more nutritious than the regular sandwich or wrap offerings.
Nutritional stats are very good. Half a pack of the BLT salad has 97 calories; 4.5g protein; 2.8g carbohydrate and 7.5g fat. Half a pack of the Wasabi salad has 70 calories; 2.7g protein; 8.9g carbohydrate and 2.6g fat.
If I were eating or serving this at home I would probably be tempted to add a little extra protein in the form of chicken, ham, cheese, canned beans etc but if you’re looking for a one-stop option for the workplace, park or just on the go then you will be more than satisfied.
