Return to Slender Bariatric Portion Plate

Book and Plate

Undoubtedly the most frequent question I am asked on this website, on social media sites, at Support Group meetings, seminars, by journalists and via personal emails is “How much should I or a WLS patient be eating after bariatric surgery?”

Well it isn’t an exact science (dieticians don’t always agree) but there are some very good general guidelines to follow.

But I wondered how I could take the guesswork out of the equation. The answer was to develop a bariatric portion plate which could provide the essential information in one easy operation.

I didn’t want to produce a “kiddie/toddler” plate nor a “look-at-me-I’m-on-a-special-diet” one that draws unwelcome attention… but a stylish, high-quality and moreover discreet plate that you would be happy to eat off alone or in company!

I have worked on this for months… spoken to specialist bariatric teams, dieticians (across the globe), plate producers and most importantly weight-loss surgery patients. And the result is what you now see here, a Return to Slender Bariatric Portion Plate.

I had several “musts” when it came to the design…

I. It must conform with what the “experts” recommend regarding portion size. This differs according to the time out after weight-loss surgery… but we believe we have got it right for most mid-term patients. Early patients may not be able to eat the quantities recommended but the proportions are still good for them; and those much further out from surgery will still find the guidelines useful (although may want to up their vegetable/salad portion to encroach a little on the protein section).

2. It must look discreet and stylish… we hope we have achieved that look.

3. It must be easy to clean and be dishwasher friendly. We’re told our plate can be washed countless times in the dishwasher pn a gentle/short programme without any fading.

4. It must also be microwave friendly. Many melamine bariatric or healthy portion plates are not… they char. It means our plate costs more to produce but we think it’s worth it so that you can reheat your food in the microwave if you so wish without having to use a second dish for the reheating process. We didn’t want our plate to look like picnic ware… just something you would be happy to put on the table regardless of occasion.

THE DETAILS

The plate is a 22-cm/81/2-inch bone china rimmed plate that has a recommended food loading area of some 15 cm/6 inches. It is dishwasher friendly and microwave-safe. Every plate comes with general advice on portion control and is also backed-up with recipes and recommendations on www.bariatriccookery.com for some very tasty meal options.
