As we steadily march through 2014 to the half-way point (with our New Year Resolutions very firmly behind us and maybe even forgotten) it’s good to revisit and keep our weight-loss goals in mind. Reminding ourselves of these and looking at those of others can be especially motivating when the going gets a bit tough.
I found the reasons why many of my WLS friends wanted to lose weight often mirrored my own but seeing them on paper made them real and attainable. Here are some which motivated me to keep going…
* I want to be able to cross my legs comfortably.
* I want to be able to bend down and pick something off the floor easily.
* I want to be able to put on my socks, clip my toe-nails and lace my trainers without asking for help.
* I want to be able to sit in a fixed chair in a café.
* I want to be able to choose any chair in a venue not the largest or the most sturdy.
* I want to be able cut down on my medications on the say-so of my doctor, not increase them.
* I want to get a better night’s sleep.
* I want to be able to fasten the seat belt easily in the car; on an air flight; and negotiate the aisle of a plane without feeling embarrassed.
* I want to feel comfortable when socialising, shopping and going about my normal day-to-day life without worrying about how people are judging me and my size.
* I want to play with my kids; go for a swim; join the gym or just amble in the shopping mall without worrying about tiredness and my ability to do it for more than a few minutes.
* I want to shop in normal clothes shop for standard-range clothes and take advantage of sales items in regular sizes.
In other words I want to be NORMAL AND HEALTHY. I want to feel better about myself, my life, my health and my future. It’s a big ask but with the additional tool of WLS I believe I can do it!

I want to be able to sit comfy on a plane, to visit my son in California, plus not getting hot & sore in the hot weather, I had a gastric sleeve 8-2-14 I have lost over 4 stone so far, I was on steroids with little mobility I would like to lose 4 more stone, but I’m getting there so every 1lb off is a step forward so don’t give up….. :-))

I wanted to achieve all of the a/m goals to greater or lesser degrees, (not too bothered about crossing my legs), 😉 … I have managed all of them but still struggle buying trousers in main stream shops. A target I hope to reach this year x

And you certainly will Tom – rarely have I come across someone with such a dogged determination! C x

Sounds like you’re doing so well Christine and all those slow but steady pounds do add up. Great to feel more comfortable and to have more mobility isn’t it? C x
Christine Underhill says
Yes, some people say they’re happy to have had the sleeve, my answer is most definitely that I am, as I had put on 4 stone with steroids, having 4 herniated lower discs which makes exercise very painful but I’m doing as much as I can. Plus I have PMR, so it’s hard but I am determined to get where I want to be……

It’s good to hear such a positive outlook to managing your pain and limitations Christine – your determination is most inspiring! C x

I agree with all the I wants & I am gradually able to do most of them now. Gastric sleeve in Nov 2013′ current loss so far is 5 stone.
I am a new women I feel fantastic, no sore legs, no breathless walking & shopping for clothes is so much fun 🙂
I see ladies who are very large & I want to tell them ” get a gastric sleeve done” I don’t because that would be rude but I would shout it from the roof tops ‘Best thing I have ever done’.

I’m so pleased everything is working out for you Teresa – a 5 stone weight loss in about 6 months in extremely good. It’s very tempting to want to spread the word to those who you think would appreciate the surgery but you’re right to keep quiet. Most people wanting the surgery will seek out the help and ask questions when they’re ready but resent it being suggested to them. I just wish I had had my surgery sooner – although I don’t know if I would have been ready for the huge changes required. Keep in touch and keep well. C x

I am on the waiting list for a sleeve operation and I have found your website invaluable to me. Thank you so much for all your help. I want my son to be proud of me but I also want to be proud of myself. I have about seven stone to lose to be healthy and I know I can do it with your help and my family’s support.

What a terrific can-do attitude Moira – and I am so pleased that you doing this for yourself as well as others! Hopefully you will get your date soon and can start to make plans. In the meantime do all you can to find out more, prepare yourself and dip into what it will be like post-op with eating, exercise and emotional hurdles to leap (there’s lots on the website to explore). Many thanks for your kind and supportive words – they do mean such a lot and make my work so worthwhile. Do keep in touch! C x
