So very good to hear from you Jean and so happy to find that the books and the Newsletter are proving helpful. I often say that even before WLS you can get into some good habits and start to prepare for the journey ahead...and you seem to be doing just that. The baked treats came about after a few support group visits...I wanted to take something along to sample and soups were ok (in a flask) but what else? A few baked treats were the answer and I couldn't believe how popular they became...so now brownies, apple or pear cake, banana teabread and carrot and raisin muffins...bariatric-friendly of course, now have a following! Thanks for your lovely comments and support...the next newsletter will be going out soon. Hope you get your date soon too. Carol x

Pietre,

You're so right, WLS can benefit many...and you're a fine example of one that demonstrates this. It's very short-sighted of those who think WLS is a drain on NHS resources when they don't look and think long-term. Good luck and best wishes to you long-term for your courageous decision to go ahead with surgery and then make it work for yourself and your community! Carol

I have had no statins, diabetic, or blood pressure medication since the day of my bypass. All of which results in savings for the NHS, and according to my GP the costs of the bypass would be recovered in 24 months. So both the NHS and myself have both benefited from my surgery. It's not an easy journey, but with luck, I will be around for quite a while to enjoy the benefits. My thanks to all at St Richards, and Guy Slater for giving me a second chance at life.

Hi Carol
I have recieved my copy of Return 2 Slender Second Helpings and I must say it is great. It has lovely recipes I also like the tea time treats you have in this book. Also my family just love the Blueberry Muffins I make. The recipe is easy to make, I found it in one of your Newsletters. I always lookforward to your Newsletter with great new dishes to make. I am still waiting to have my WLS but feel very confident I will enjoy my WLS with your help, so a very big thank you.
Kindest regards, Jean

Mandi, the portion size refers to those who eat a normal size portion (not a weight-loss surgery portion) so it might be a partner, friend, family member etc. The WLS portion is what is considered to be the average amount eaten by a weight-loss surgery patient, and is usually about half a normal portion. This varies according to what stage you are at after surgery...early days you might only eat 1/4 of the portion and then go on to 1/2 normal portion. There are many variables but this is my recommendation and advice based on personal experience. Hope this helps. Carol

Hi Carol! Many thanks for your reply and the advice! I am also going to prepare some soups and meals for when im eating pureed food and would like to know if 125mls is about right or too much for portion sizes when using small tubs for freezing? Also in relation to the calorie intake am i right in thinking that it might be around 1500 kcals per day or is it less? Thanks about the vitamin info. Im also wondering about the artificial sweeteners and if they are perfectly safe to use all the time as i heard they cause all sorts of problems with prolonged use? Whats fact and whats fiction? If you could let me know as im sure you or one of your friends in nutrition will know and put my mind at ease. Its not that im too worried but i did tell you that i had a sweet tooth and want to train myself away from sugar cookery and use sweeteners in things that i can eat in moderation. In the past ive made my own jam, chutney and baking and dont know if sweeteners will work in the recipes i have or if i need to tweek them? Any way thanks again and i will be in touch again! Andrea, 41

Sheila, you can order the book off this website either on the home page or the book page. Or you can go to Amazon Marketplace. They don't stock themselves so you will need to search the site. Type in Return 2 Slender...Second Helpings' in the books category and click on the entry. It will then tell you that you can order through the seller Bariatric Cookery (UK) Ltd which is us! If you have problems then do email me info@bariatriccookery.com and I am sure we can sort something out. Carol
