My mail bag has been bulging this week with requests for early post-op drinks that are substantial enough to be a meal. I have directed many to the soups and smoothies we have featured on the website from our archive but also tried out one or two new variations – this is one of them.
I don’t imbibe many protein shakes myself unless I’m pushed for time, feeling a bit under the weather and can’t stomach much more, or need to boost my protein in a quick and easy way when a busy time is in full throttle work wise. It’s been that kind of a week so the apple spice protein shake has been much enjoyed.
I used a Cinnamon Bun flavour protein shake formula when testing but you could use plain vanilla with a dash of cinnamon or ground mixed spice instead – I would use about 1 tsp of the latter ground spice but feel free to use less or more according to your taste. The nutritional stats are based on the latter vanilla protein powder (Slender Blend) with 1 tsp ground spices. I have also used a small scoop (holding 20 g) of powder but you can double this for a much thicker shake and substantially more protein if liked – I prefer the thinner version but it is personal.
CINNAMON APPLE SPICE PROTEIN SHAKE
250 ml/1 cup low-fat skimmed or unsweetened almond milk
3 tbsp/¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce
1 scoop low-fat, low-sugar protein powder (Bariatric Fusion Cinnamon Bun for example or Vanilla Slender Blend from Protein World mixed with 1 tsp ground mixed spice or ground cinnamon)
- Place the milk, apple sauce and protein powder (with or without the ground mixed spice or cinnamon) in a blender or shaker.
- Pulse to mix or shake well to combine.
- Pour into a serving glass and sprinkle with extra spice to serve if liked.
